Fire Task Force wants to build on previous study

The Fire Service Study Group/ Task Force continues to iron out some issues.  At a City Council work session they had brought up hiring a consultant for another study on reuse of the current Safety Center for Fire use only.  There have already been 2 studies on reuse, one in 2008 and another in 2011.  There was some argument as to the merit of paying another consultant with comments from City Administrator Tim Madigan suggesting that a certain member of the committee may have a bias.  Vice Chair Erica Zweifel commented that the group was up front with each other and hashed out previous issues between the City and Rural Fire.  She says they talked a lot about the history and said the other studies didn’t have the deatil they were looking for.  Specifically questions surrounding an H-VAC system.  Does it need to be as extensive without the police department housed there?  Zweifel said there seemed to be confusion that the study group wanted a new study when what they really want is to build on one they have.  It has to go back to each entity for approval.  Council will have an opportunity to vote on this at Tuesday’s meeting.

PRAB wants your input on public use for forfeited land

The Parks and Recreation Advisory Board, also known as PRAB, is looking for your ideas. Now that the City has acquired forfeited land at Fargaze Meadows, they have to make use of it for the public.  One idea already brought up at last week’s PRAB meeting.    Board member David Hvistendahl says a group of parents would like to see a BMX park.  He says there’s lots of room for a number of activities.  The forfeited area includes 40 acres.  Hvistendahl says the Board will be planning for it over the next year and  wants citizen input.  He encouraged the parents promoting a BMX park to put something a little more formal together and get it on the PRAB’s agenda.  Hvistendahl added that as they look to public use, the City also needs to further reduce the grade of soil around the wellhead.

Maple Street closure set for Monday

A segment of Maple Street from Woodley to Meadowview Drive will close Monday through Wednesday next week as part of the Prairie, Maple and Veteran’s Park Maintenance Project.  Pavement milling contractors will be on-site to grind the existing asphalt and road base and place a new 5” base layer of gravel.  The closure is expected to last from 7A.M. Monday to 5:00 P.M. Wednesday.  City Engineering Coordinator, Sean Simonson, encourages motorists to use Prairie Street Street instead.

Highway 19 construction begins Monday

A detour first and then single lane traffic.  Hwy 19 construction from Cannon Falls to Northfield is set to begin Monday. Crews will be replacing several culverts which means a detour for about 2 weeks, depending on the weather.   You can then expect single lane traffic with a flagger as crews resurface the roadway.  The whole project is scheduled for completion in mid-September.
