Fire Service studies funding and cost allocation

The Fire Service Study group discussed funding and cost allocation of creating a regional fire service.  Vice Chair, Erica Zweife said there are options on how to share costs – a subcommittee made up of Lee Runzheimer, Jerry Anderson and Glen Castore did research on taxing.  There are 3 different ways of looking at how to tax them. There are also different methods of looking at the  value of property.  While grass fires are fought, they don’t carry as high a value as homes and buildings so they are “weighted” differently.   There’s also a difference between City and Rural because the level of service is different in regard to response time.  It takes 8 to 10 minutes for a truck to get to rural areas while it takes 3 to 4 minutes in town.   Zweifel said it costs approximately 60% more to insure a home in the rural areas than in town due to the higher risk of being further away from fire services.   She emphasized that the study group wanted to look at a number of indicators for the fire service you’re getting, the cost for the service and how to share that fairly amongst the community.  Zweifel says the study group plans on having a recommendation of a governance model along with costs to present in September.

No one’s filed yet for Ward 4 seat

So far, City Clerk Deb Little, says no one has filed for Ward 4 council seat.  The seat is currently being filled by Jessica Peterson White who was appointed after Patrick Ganey left in 2011.  A special election will be held on November 5th to finish out the Ward 4 term which ends in 2014.  The City is taking applications through August 13th.

Tour de SAVE and VBF are successes

The Tour de SAVE, formerly Tour de Nick, bicycle run had a beautiful day on Saturday for their 10th annual ride in honor of Nick Sansome.  Organizer Bill Metz thanked the crowd of nearly 100 bicyclers and the numerous volunteers for their support in taking this Northfield event nationwide.  This year 5 other cities around the country rode  for SAVE – Suicide Awareness Voices of Education.  Well over $30,000 was raised nationwide while over $22,000 of that was from Northfield.

VBF

By all accounts the Vintage Band Festival was yet another success.  This is the third Vintage Band festival brought to Northfield by Festival Director Paul Niemisto.  Locals and out-of-towners had the opportunity to to listen to over 30 bands playing over 100 concerts.  Mayor Dana Graham introduced the headliner Friday night, Kenny Carr and the Tigers saying we were in for a treat and we were.  The variety of bands offered something for everyone

Night to Unite tomorrow

Tomorrow night is national Night to Unite.  Interim Police Chief Chuck Walerius says the event is designed to heighten crime and drug prevention awareness in neighborhoods, to generate support for local crime programs and enhance community and local law enforcement partnerships. Police will visit each party with crime prevention materials for adults and kids and find out what the neighborhood’s concerns are. Walerius says it’s also a good opportunity to get to know your neighbors better.
