School Board to look at facilities to prepare for All Day K

The School Board intends on setting up a work session sometime in November to look over their facilities in order to prepare for All Day K that starts in 2014.  Superintendent Dr. Richardson said with the legislature passing a bill to fund all day k, that means they need to figure out how to create the space.  He added that parents will still have the choice of whether to send their kids to a half day or all day, however, he thinks most parents will send them for the full day.  In fact, he’s getting word that some parents are “red-shirting” their kids, meaning they’re holding them back a year to take advantage of the free all day k.  Richardson said that some of the classrooms already are available for full day but not enough for the estimated 300 students.  They’ll need at least 4 classrooms set aside.

Local Heartsafe Project trains over 2,000 community members so far

The Heartsafe project is a local initiative sponsored by Northfield Hospital and Clinics EMS.  Paramedic Kathy Hanek explains that the program introduces community members to the signs and symptoms of cardiac arrest and introduces them to Bystander CPR.  This is called a “No Fear” CPR.  Dr. Jennifer Fisher said that traditional CPR involves helping with respirations, breathing.  But they’ve found that just doing the compressions will also deliver the oxygen needed.  Traditional CPR was complicated for most bystanders, in turn, 2/3 of cases no CPR was given as bystanders waited for emergency workers.  The Heartsafe project has, so far, trained nearly 2,000 people in the last 2 years.  They take requests from any organization, business, church or individual that would like training.  Contact them by calling 507-646-1523 or email heartsafeproject@gmail.com.  The training lasts about an hour.  Fisher says immediate help is imperative – to wait is too late.  Before bystander CPR,  the survival rate statistics in Minnesota for those who did NOT receive immediate assistance was about 8%.  Since initiating this new CPR, numbers have shown in Dakota County, that the survival rate is 57%.

Bohlen’s family prepares to honor Josh

The family of the Northfield man who went missing more than a year ago, has organized a memorial service for him.  39 year old Joshua Ben Bohlen’s truck was found on Goodhue Avenue north of Dennison and his hat was found in a field in September of last year.  Since then, police, family and friends have searched and found nothing more.  His credit cards have not been used.  His mother, Ruth Bohlen, went to court last month to obtain a death certificate so they can take care of his property and finances.  It could take 3 years to come through.  In the meantime, the family wants to honor his memory.  The memorial service is planned for 11 a.m. on Nov. 9 at the South Suburban Evangelical Free Church in Apple Valley.  The community is welcome to attend.  Bohlen suffered with schizophrenia but his mom said that was just a small part of him.  The filing for a death certificate does not end the search for Bohlen.  Northfield Police will continue to follow up on any leads.
