Charter outlines amendments to Code of Ethics

The Charter Commission has been working on introducing a Code of Ethics to the City Council for a couple of years.  They had an abbreviated presentation at the tail end of this week’s meeting.  While there are ethics requirements in the Charter, Chair Anthony Becker says the amendment they’re proposing would create a path by which citizen complaints could be investigated.  Becker said the Council has the tools to create the process and should be responsible for it.  Criminal penalties already exist within the ordinance.  The Charter is advocating the addition of administrative penalties and reporting requirements.  The council will formally receive the amendments at their July 16th.  If the Council unanimously approves the amendments after the 2nd reading, they become effective in 90 days.  However, if they don’t, the Charter has the option to take it directly to the voters.

Fire called to MOM Brands

Fire was called to MOM Brands this morning.  Interim Police Chief Chuck Walerius said these calls come in from time to time.  Many times the fire is out before firefighters arrive.  Occasionally it’s more than that.  MOM Brands is required to report any incidents.  Firefighters were in and out of the building rather quickly.

City looking to give “Business Park” a makeover

The Planning Commission met last night.  City Administrator Tim Madigan was present at the meeting to introduce a discussion on Enterprise Park, a business park Northfield’s been discussing for some time.  Northfield’s been at a disadvantage with many towns for commercial and manufacturing.  Madigan said that this item will come up at a council meeting in August to address how to proceed in revisiting the development issue while keeping in mind the City’s Comprehensive Plan.   He says the term Business Park has almost developed a negative connotation now in Northfield.  His suggestion is rename it and take a fresh look at options.  The plan is to also narrow the focus to commercial and manufacturing rather than adding retail and housing.  The feeling is that Northfield isn’t large enough for the mixed use plan originally discussed in 2010.  You can view the entire planning commission meeting online at kymnradio.net.
