Farmington man, a South St. Paul police officer, charged with fleeing police

A South St. Paul police officer has been charged with dwi and fleeing a peace officer.  A Rosemount police officer attempted to pull over 36 year old Cory Michael Slifko of Farmington last Tuesday when he fled the scene.  Slifko was charged by summons with fleeing a peace officer, a felony; 2 counts of 4th degree dwi and criminal damage to property all misdemeanors.  Slifko has served as a South St. Paul cop for 13 years and was recently promoted to Sergeant.  According to the Press Release he’ll make his next court appearance in a few weeks.

Faribault man dies in custody

A Faribault man in the Rice County jail accused of a violent assault against his girlfriend is dead.  27 year old Shane Wilson was charged with multiple felonies including attempted first degree murder.  His girlfriend was found by Faribault police with at least 30 stab wounds, her children in the car with her.  In the early morning hours of June 10th, officers at the Rice County Main Jail requested assistance with a medical emergency.  In a Press Release, Sheriff Troy Dunn says, Staff and officers as well as Faribault Rescue and North Ambulance personnel immediately rendered lifesaving aid to Shane Wilson.  Wilson was transported to District One Hospital and then airlifted to North Memorial Medical Center for continued advanced care.  The Rice County Sheriff’s Department was that Wilson passed away yesterday morning.  Wilson had been the subject of a massive manhunt after he fled from the assault.  He had contemplated suicide at the time.

Fire Service Task Force working on plans

The Fire Service task force met last Thursday.  They spent much of the meeting taking a step back and going over the report from ESCI.  Lee Runzheimer’s suggestion of a governance by end users will be a part of the informational materials they’ll use in community meetings.  Vice Chair Erica Zwiefel says right now, the task force is working on their own materials that will accompany the report.  There are 4 categories they’ll focus on governance, cost and allocation, facilities and equipment.  The group knows that it’s going to taking longer to iron out the issues and have asked each member to reaffirm their commitment to the task force.  ESCI may come back in the Fall for community wide meetings.

 2012 NHS grad earns high honor from FFA 

A 2012 Northfield High School graduate and Randolph FFA member, John Peterson has been named the 2013 Minnesota FFA Star in Production Placement, one of the association’s highest honors.  The Northfield News reports, Peterson competed against three other finalists at the 84th Minnesota FFA Convention, held in April.  Peterson has been a member of the Randolph FFA since 2008 and served as the chapter’s secretary in 2011-2012. He was involved with fundraising, drove family farm tractors in Randolph’s annual FFA Tractor Parade and pulled the float in local parades.  Peterson is currently attending South Central College in Mankato studying agricultural production and plans to transfer to the University of Wisconsin-River Falls to study agronomy.

DJJD Ambassador Candidate meeting this week

The Defeat of Jesse James Days Ambassador Committee is still seeking new ambassadors to reign over the 2013 DJJD Celebration.   Ambassador scholarship candidates must be 17 years old by July 15th, be unmarried with no children and live or work within the Northfield School District.   Junior ambassador candidates must be 6-8 years old by August 10th.  The Ambassador Scholarship Program revolves around volunteerism and developing leaders that will serve as positive role models and be ambassadors for the Defeat of Jesse James Days Celebration and Northfield.”  The DJJD Ambassador Scholarship Committee will host an informational meeting at 6:30 Wednesday evening at the Northfield Library.  Information is also available on our website www.djjd.org .
