The Rice County Sheriff’s office was called to the Flying J Wednesday night on report of a woman slumped over in a vehicle near the entrance to the truckstop.  According to the criminal complaint, the woman appeared confused and agitated when the Deputy tapped on her window, telling him she thought she was in Shakopee, and that she’s dying of cancer.  When the woman attempted to get out of the vehicle, she dropped a hypodermic needle.  After trying to break it in half, she was then handcuffed and placed in the back of a squad car.  Fluid in the needle tested positive for methamphetamine. A search of the vehicle netted a .38 caliber handgun (reported stolen from California), ammunition, drug paraphernalia, brass knuckles and a taser.  23 year old Berlynn Fleury of Belle Plaine is charged with Controlled Substance in the 5th degree, a felony and carrying a weapon without a permit which is a gross misdemeanor.  Fleury is currently in the Rice County jail.

DARE graduation almost didn’t happen

wav #15  open with sound of kids yelling DARE DAY….5th graders at Sibley and Bridgewater 5th grade at Bridgewaterschools graduated from the DARE program yesterday.  A program that nearly didn’t happen this year as Officer Angela Borchardt was on leave. Executive Director of the statewide DARE program, Kathy Ackerman, sent out a call to DARE officers around the country and had volunteers from as far away as Virginia and as close as Rice County.  Deputy Derek Estrem taught the abbreviated 10 week course.  He’s been teaching the class for 2 years and loves the interaction with the kids.  He explained the program teaches students how to deal with drugs, bullying, stress and peer pressure.  Ackerman praised the Northfield police, schools and community for outstanding commitment to our youth.  Cub Foods Store manager Nick Johnson said they jumped at the chance to help support DARE.  SuperValu paid for the work books, graduation cake and had a semi truck the kids toured.  Bridgewater Principal Nancy Antoine spoke to the parents telling them to get involved, know who your childrens friends are and “get in their business”.  Ackerman added that they’ve “passed the baton to you” (parents).  The students have been given information now it’s the parents turn to install morals and values.  Several Northfield police officers and reserves were on hand to congratulate the kids including Deputy Chief Dukatz and Sgts. PT Haider and Thad Monroe.  They then served cake to over 100 Bridgewater 5th graders.  Sibley held their graduation yesterday morning.
