news radioLibrary project within reach

Northfield Library Director, Theresa Jensen said 2 weeks ago that the Library improvement project was on hold due to a substantial increase in the cost estimate from the January numbers.  She would not say how much that was, however, after meeting with the architectural team last Friday, she says they’ve brought it down to within $168,000 of the original estimate.  The cost increases have been attributed to an increase in building materials, including concrete, steel and windows in an active construction season. Jensen said City staff will continue to refine additional project costs.  The overall project budget is nearly $2.6 million.  Jensen said they now expect to go to bid by June 17, which moves the date for opening the renovated space into mid-March, 2016. The current library will open its temporary site in City Hall on July 13, after which the library at 210 Washington will close. Staff and volunteers will then pack the majority of the library’s materials for storage and removal to an off-site location.  This sets back their timeline by about 2 months.

BYR looking for donations for Goods for Good

This weekend is the community wide Goods for Good garage sale and Beyond the Yellow Ribbon is looking for donations.  Organizer Virginia Kaczmarek said they’re looking for power tools, antiques, collectibles, MENS stuff!.  It’s a great time to declutter your garage guys!  They don’t want any clothes or old computers.  The sale will be inside the old Chamber office on Hwy 3, that’s also where they’ll be taking donations from 4 to 6pm today through Thursday.

Deputy Liebenstein remembered during Nat’l Law Enforcement week

This is National Law Enforcement Memorial week.  Two weeks ago Rice County Sheriff Troy Dunn attended a service held to honor all 274 officers killed in the line of duty in Minnesota including Terry Hanson and John Liebenstein.  Last Sunday was the 19th anniversary of his death.  Dunn says he was overwhelmed by the outpouring of support from the public and law enforcement.   He said they remember the families too.  “John will never hold his grandchildren and they will only know him through pictures and video.  We never forget”.  The man who killed Liebenstein, Timothy Chambers, is serving a life sentence without parole, however, Legislators are contemplating a reversal of that type of sentence for juveniles.  Chambers was 17 at the time of his conviction.  If passed, Chambers could be released next year.

Dundas Council meets

The Dundas City Council meets tonight at 7 o’clock.  City Administrator John McCarthy says the City was improperly levied for taxes on the communications antenna on the Water Tower.  The assessor’s office has agreed to abate and void the levied tax, but the City will have to pay the first half and then will receive a refund.  McCarthy will be in studio tomorrow morning at 8:45 with a recap.

City recognition program tomorrow

The public is invited to a recognition program at 5:30 tomorrow evening in the Council Chambers.   Mayor Graham, City Administrator Haggenmiller, and City Department Heads will recognize City of Northfield employees who have reached a benchmark for years of service, Board & Commission members who have either retired or resigned in 2014, and graduating high school seniors who volunteer on the Mayors Youth Council and other Boards & Commissions.  Council will then hold a special meeting at 7 o’clock regarding several items including the LDC.

Beyond the Open Mic with Don McGee and Victor Summa will be aired at 6 this evening due to a conflict with the Twins game tomorrow night.
