news radioNfld man implicated in jewelry thefts

A Northfield man made his first court appearance this morning on charges of receiving stolen property.  According to the criminal complaint, the Rice County Sheriff’s office started receiving numerous reports of burglaries in rural Rice County last June, many of which involved stolen jewelry.  A white Dodge Stealth was associated with the crimes, that vehicle was spotted at the Plum Street residence of 25 year old Taylor Collin Heckers, who is well known to Northfield police.  After months of investigation, Detectives tracked pawn shops for the stolen jewelry and connected Heckers.  The March 30th complaint accuses him of pawning over $4,000 worth of stolen jewelry.  He faces up to 5 years in jail, if convicted.  Heckers has a previous conviction for receiving stolen property and an extensive criminal history.

NAFRS online and looking for help

NAFRS has a new website.  They went live yesterday.  There’s a tab on the site to click if you’re interested in becoming a member.  Fire Chief Gerry Franek said they’re looking to hire 4 to 6 firefighters.  They are now taking applications, testing will be in June, the hiring process will start in July and they’ll be online by August.  Franek says you must be a high school graduate and have a grasp of the English language. He added that they want to make sure that applicants can hear and understand them and take orders.  He says there will be plenty of classes and weekend training.  If you need more information you’re invited to stop by the Fire Hall on 5th street.  Or check out their website http://www.nafrs.org

The Gazebo’s gone

The River Walk Gazebo near the Archer House is gone.  Crews removed the structure after the City’s Building Official, Jim Kessler, deemed it unsafe.  City Project Manager, Jasper Kruggel, says reconstruction of the gazebo is tentatively scheduled for this year.

Council ponders parking at police facility

The Northfield City Council meets tonight at 7 o’clock. The only item on the regular agenda is a change order for the Enterprise Park reclamation project.  Due to 2nd street construction costs coming in under budget, the City is requesting to use some of those extra dollars to add 12 parking spaces to the new Police Facility.  The meeting will be streamed live on the City’s website.

Days of Prayer begins Thursday

The Northfield Days of Prayer begin Thursday and continue through Saturday.  Events start with breakfast at the Northfield Ballroom from 6:30 to 8:30 on Thursday.  Tickets are $10.  On Friday, participants will gather at the Northfield Middle School auditorium for music and prayer.  On Saturday, organizer Sandy Valek explains that they will be canvassing the City with prayer.  There will be a bus, bands and people praying all over the city.  Internationally renowned Pastor Poncho Murguia is the guest speaker and will be attending all the events.  For more information go to northfieldprays.com.
