NAFRS recruiting firefighters
The Northfield Area Fire and Rescue Services joint powers board met last week. They plan on hiring 4 to 6 firefighters. Chair Glen Castore said they’ll be recruiting in early May. The website will also be up in early May. In June, potential firefighters will be interviewed and go through testing. Castore added that there are 2 types of testing including cognitive abilities. They are thinking of changing that test to more closely match what firefighters actually do. And then the physical test. By the end of July they expect to have made their selections.

Mock crash staged near Prom for maximum impact
Firefighter Mark Etzell’s daughter is one of the actors in the Mock Crash set for early this afternoon at the Northfield High school. He and his daughter, Meg, has talked about it and she’s been a part of the planning process as have the other teen actors and several agencies. As a firefighter, his children were always curious when he came home from a call to find out what happened. As a dad he says parents need to talk to their kids about driver safety. It’s one of the reasons they do this mock crash around prom “to really drive home the point” of the importance of not drinking, no drugs and wearing your seatbelt. He says there’s enough pressure and influence on kids and as a parent you want to provide them with the safest environment and most fun experience. Etzell says undoubtedly there are reports of crashes around prom events. As a firefighter, he does not want his pager to go off at all on Prom night. He says there are hundreds of kids traveling to and from dinners, pictures and parties. Etzell says the more kids you get into a car, the more distracted the driver will be. Prom is one of those events and he asks kids to leave the driver alone and let them concentrate on the job of driving. Northfield’s Prom is this Saturday.
