Some good news from the Northfield City Council meeting was the presentation by DSI Sanitation.  Director of Sales and Marketing, Jeff Weist said that Northfielders recycled 1,221 tons in 2014.  That’s an increase of 18 tons from 2013.  He said “good work”.  Dick’s Sanitation shares a portion of the proceeds with the City.  Weist presented the City with a check for $15,873.  The council meets for a work session next week.  The agenda has not yet been set.

Mayor praises NAFRS Chief Franek and Police Chief Nelson for their leadership

The Mayor gave his State of the City address on Tuesday at the Chamber of Commerce luncheon at Jesse James lanes.  He recapped last years accomplishments including the formation of NAFRS, the joint powers for the regional fire department.  He said under the leadership of Chief Gerry Franek, NAFRS is among the most efficient volunteer fire departments in the state and the transition between City run and a joint powers was “seamless”.  Graham also commented on the new Police Facility and praised Chief Monte Nelson for his leadership and noted the improved morale.  The Police department is also active in community programming.  Officers are working with TORCH students at the high school and with the Northfield ambulance service to create a combination Explorer Post program.  Graham reported that the City is in good financial shape with a 54% reserve, more than guidelines suggest and property values are stable.  There were upwards of 70 people in attendance and the meal was catered by the Quarterback Club.

Rice County distracted driving numbers

Last week law enforcement was on the lookout in particular for distracted driving.  Rice County Sheriff Troy Dunn says they handed out 5 Inattentive Driving Warnings.  While that’s not many, he said next time they’ll put officers in unmarked cars.  Dunn told KYMN that’s not in an effort to hand out more citations but rather to promote safe driving behavior.  He added that it takes just a moment for a crash to happen and your life is changed forever.   Other numbers from last week include 16 equipment violation warnings, 9 seatbelt citations and 2 warnings, 4 Speeding citations with 31 folks getting a warning and 3 Driving after revocation/suspension  citations.

The National Weather Service issued a red flag warning for Rice County yesterday.  That ban has been lifted.

Healthfinders invites you to their Gala After Party

Healthfinders Collaborative is a community clinic established in 2005.   Executive Director Charlie Mandile was on Community Pharmacists Conversations with Jessica Astrup recently and explained that Healthfinders is known for their primary care.  They are staffed with doctors and nurses and just last year opened a dental facility.  In addition, they have a large wellness program and health advocates.  They’ve also recently joined forces with Sterling Drug for their medication assistance program.  Healthfinders Collaborative is holding their Gala Fundraiser this Saturday night at The Grand.  The theme is Rice County Proud and well they should be as the event has grown from a few dedicated community members to a sell out crowd of over 230 people.  The dinner is sold out but you’re invited to the After Party beginning at 9:30 p.m.  This portion is free and open to the public, with entertainment provided by Ile du Berceau – a gypsy jazz ensemble.
