news radioTornado drill day and burning ban lifted

Today is tornado drill day.  You’ve likely heard the sirens already.  Emergency Management Director Tim Isom says to expect another one at 6:55pm.  Rice County Sheriff Troy Dunn reminds folks to have a plan and practice it with your family.  He also says don’t run outside to take photos!  And, as always, listen to KYMN for weather updates with Weather Specialist Bob Matheson.  Rice County has also lifted the burning ban.

Electric fence ordinance creating a spark

Five landowners within the Dundas city limits were given notice that they needed to remove their electric and/or barbed wire fences.  City Administrator John McCarthy said 3 have complied, 1 said the fence is not live and asked for a little more time to remove it, which was granted.  However, one landowner, according to McCarthy, says they’ve had an indication that that property plans to continue to violate the ordinance.  Asked if the fence was live, McCarthy answered “I don’t know, I’m not gonna grab it and check it”.  Dundas can cite the property owner for the misdemeanor violation on a continuous basis for as long as they continue not to comply.  McCarthy says they can’t just deactivate it.  McCarthy explained that some landowners have removed the insulators  and stapled the wire to the fenceposts.  In other words, it doesn’t have to be costly to the owner.  McCarthy estimates it’s about ¼ mile of fence along a public roadway where people walk.  The fence is along CR 8 or Railway Street across from Epic Enterprises.  McCarthy says it’s a concern as there are children in the area.  This isn’t over.

Northfield School Board discusses changes to their facilities plan

The Northfield School Board discussed adjustments to the district facilities plan.  Up first was Longfellow School.  Superintendent Dr. Chris Richardson said, after hearing from the Community Services staff, they believe that moving all the infant and early childhood education programs to Greenvale Park makes more sense.  That would leave the Longfellow building as the Area Learning Center on the top floor and the district office and storage on the main floor.  Another consideration, should the Governor’s proposal for a universal 4 year old program pass, is where to put them.  And finally, they talked about ways to save  the old high school if they build a new facility.  An option would be to save the gymnasium, the auditorium and the new cafeteria.  Richardson says it’s a workable plan but it has an impact on playfields.  All of this still has to be voted on by the Board.
