Council goes for Round 3 on the LDC
The Northfield City Council meets tonight for a 3rd attempt at passing the Land Development Code ordinance with Planning Commission changes and possible amendments brought forth by Councilor Pownell. Building height requirements, windows and HPC involvement are the key differences between councilors. City Administrator Nick Haggenmiller sent an email to the Mayor and Councilors calling for decorum and proposing a straw poll process. They would get a read on how the vote might go before they actually vote. Dissenters of an item will be given 2 minutes to state why they’re against it and then the proposal may be amended to address those concerns and the process is repeated. At 9:40 they will call for votes. Any items remaining will be tabled until the next scheduled meeting. According to the Council’s policy, they are “guided” by Roberts Rules while allowing for flexibility. The City’s IT department confirms that the meeting will be streamed live on their website. On Beyond the Open Mic, Don McGee and Vic Summa discuss some background of the LDC including the December council meeting brought up last week. That’s at 6:02 tonight after the news.
Dundas Council discusses a possible new City Hall
The Dundas Council met last night. City Administrator John McCarthy says the City is growing and the current City Hall isn’t functional anymore. He said the City purchased the old school property with the intent to build new city hall. He added that they could build a freestanding building or partner with private enterprise and then the City would occupy a portion of a building. The location is right downtown. McCarthy said they’ve had some preliminary discussions with a developer. They’re in the early stages of discussion. Dundas has had an unwritten policy of allowing groups to meet at City Hall outside of city business. There’s a growing concern with this facility regarding security issues and simply ease of use as more groups utilize the space. McCarthy said that once upon a time it was a great community service but it has outgrown it’s purpose.
Tornado Drill Day set for Thursday
April is severe weather awareness month and Rice County Sheriff Troy Dunn said there will be day and night drills this week. Dunn adds that the schools are great about it but he asks that you and your family be prepared, practice your plan and don’t run out to take photos in severe weather. The City of Northfield’s Emergency Management Director, Tim Isom, said the National Weather Service will be holding a Tornado Drill Day on Thursday. Tests will take place at 1, 1:45, 2, 6:55 and 7:10. Not all devices that issue warnings may know that it’s a test, however, cell phones have a code to identify a test and will likely ignore it.
