Richardson receives MASA Polaris Leadership award
Northfield School District Superintendent Chris Richardson has received a prestigious award. The Minnesota Association of School Administrators (MASA) has named Richardson the recipient of the MASA Polaris Leadership Award. He was named Superintendent of the Year in 2012 but says this one centers around life time achievement both in and out of the educational realm. He is humbled by the honor adding that he’s not ready for retirement! He said it’s an affirmation of all the things you hope you’ve been doing right and had a positive impact on your community and beyond. Richardson has developed several programs and worked with legislators over the years to positively impact students and teachers. Richardson has been a Superintendent for nearly 35 years. From Iowa to Nebraska to Minnesota, he was Superintendent in Osseo and, 11 years ago, came to Northfield. He believes his biggest achievement has been nurturing young leaders. He credited the high quality people he’s worked with through the years and currently. There will be a formal award ceremony in September. At that time MASA will provide a scholarship in Richardson’s name to Northfield High School.
“Forever Green” bill looks to incentivize cover crops
House District 20b representative David Bly is an advocate for the environment and is encouraging farmers to plant cover crops to curtail erosion which leads to sediment issues in our Rivers and water sources. He said farmers do the best they can but have to make a living. Right now the only crops that are incentivized are corn and soy. He says legislators need to find a way to incentivize different crops and look to other methods of drainage in their fields. Bly says erosion isn’t new it’s just happening much faster due to current methods. “Forever Green” is a bill he passed last year which encourages farmers to plant cover crops that could curb erosion and be profitable. He adds that people need to be educated on the problems as well. Bly can be heard on KYMN every Wednesday morning at 8:45 through the legislative session.
Liquor on Sundays? What says the Senator…
Will liquor be sold on Sundays? District 20b Senator Kevin Dahle says that his mom owned a liquor store in Iowa for many years and she “would roll over in her grave if he voted yes”, however he went on to say that he’s hearing from a number of constituents that are in favor of it, about 63%. Dahle says there will be some robust debate over the issue and it will come to a vote. He added that he welcomes any input.
