The Northfield City Council approved the appointment of Dave Bennett to Public Works Director for the City of Northfield.  “I’m excited to get started…”

Bennett was the City Engineer for Apple Valley.  He and his wife live in Farmington with their 3 small children.  Mayor Graham commended Brian Erickson for filling in after Joe Stapf retired in August.

Beyond the Yellow Ribbon kick off Celebration planned

The Mayor is committed to make Northfield a “Beyond the Yellow Ribbon” community.  The idea is to take care of our local Veterans and the families of active duty military.  He says it could be anything from repairs to their home or car to emotional support.  Many communities across the state are involved.  Out of 61 communities that have armories, we are the only one that is NOT a “Beyond the Yellow Ribbon” community.  A steering committee has been set up.  Graham says “you don’t just announce you’re a Beyond the Yellow Ribbon Community”.  There’s a process to rally businesses and the community.  It usually takes about 9 months.  There will be a community kick off celebration on the evening of March 2nd at the Armory from 6 to 8:30.   From business owners to law enforcement, clergy to citizens everyone is invited.  You may discover ways that you can be of help.  We’ll have more on the event and how “Beyond the Yellow Ribbon” is helping veterans and their families in the coming weeks.

Funeral homes merge

Benson & Langehough Funeral Home & Cremation and Bierman Funeral Home announced yesterday that they are joining forces effective immediately.  The directors, Andy Langehough and Jim Bierman, will each continue to manage their respective facilities. Bierman said they’d been talking for a couple of years as their businesses are busy but they don’t have enough to each hire another mortician.   According to Langehough this will allow them to bring in an up-and-coming mortician who will help set the stage for future business decisions and transitions.  Bierman is a native Northfielder who has been running the funeral home started by his grandfather more than 109 years ago. Langhough commented that when he moved here 14 years ago, Jim Bierman was the first to come around and welcome him to the community.  Benson & Langehough Funeral Home & Cremation has been serving the community for  more than 50 years.

2nd street lane closures lifting in 2 weeks

Just before Thanksgiving, Excel Energy began work under the Cannon River at the 2nd street bridge.   Excel spokesman Tom Hoen (hane) said that the project has been delayed. First was the brutal cold that didn’t allow them to work outside.  And Q3, the company they’ve contracted with, had major equipment failure while drilling under the river to replace a gas pipeline.  They ran into quite a bit of rock.   Hoen said, as of yesterday, if the weather and equipment holds, they should be wrapped up in 10 to 14 days.  Excel is replacing a 4 inch main with a 6 inch main along a 500 foot span.
