Extension offers nutrient management workshop for dairy and beef producers
FARMINGTON, Minn. (12/17/14) — University of Minnesota Extension is presenting a nutrient management workshop designed to aid dairy and beef feedlot producers with phosphorus and nitrogen management strategies. These workshops will take from 9:30 am to 2:00 pm on the following dates:
- January 21st at the Northfield Senior Center, 1651 Jefferson Pkwy, Northfield
- January 28th at the Steele County Administration Building, 630 Florence Ave, Owatonna
The day will start with a workshop on managing phosphorus in livestock manure by Extension Educator Randy Pepin, followed by lunch, a presentation on nitrogen credits from alfalfa and manure by Extension Agronomist Jeff Coulter, and a talk on feedlot best management practices by the local county feedlot officer.
The workshops are free to attend. Refreshments and lunch will be provided. Pre-registration is requested one week prior to the workshop. Contact Neith Little at Dakota County Extension to RSVP: 607-346-5958 or nglittle@umn.edu In case of inclement weather, please contact the Farm Information Line at 1-800-232-9077.
The workshops will begin with Extension Educator Randy Pepin discussing management strategies available to land-limited Minnesota dairy farms and beef feedlots to prevent excessive build-up of soil phosphorus. Rising commercial fertilizer prices have made livestock manure an increasingly valuable asset. Livestock manure contributes N, P, K, trace minerals, and organic matter. However, repeated application of manure at a rate that supplies all of the nitrogen needs of corn has created some soils with elevated phosphorus levels. This has made the creation and implementation of manure management plans for many livestock farms very challenging.
Next, Jeff Coulter, Extension Agronomist will present research on use on nitrogen credits for alfalfa and manure. Accurate use of nitrogen credits from alfalfa and manure can also help producers more efficiently use fertilizer inputs. Using too low of a nitrogen credit when calculating how much nitrogen to the following crop can result in excess nitrogen application, reducing farm profit, wasting resources, and impairing water quality.
The workshop will conclude with the local county feedlot officer, Wade Schulz or Dan Vermilyea discussing best management practice for feedlot management.
