news radioDundas discusses RR looking to build spur

The proposed expansion of a railroad spur was THE topic of discussion at the Dundas City Council meeting last night.  City Administrator John McCarthy says the proposal would be to build a spur on the west side of the current tracks from approximately County Road 1 to County Road 8.  That’s about 2.3 miles.  He says the Union Pacific railroad will need another 20 feet of right of way in Dundas.  He added that a concern for the City is that 118th street, a gravel road just south of the City limits, will be closed.  Past studies have shown that road to be a possible crossing for a future loop road.  This will really concern Bridgewater Township as most of it lies within their limits and land owners are concerned over imminent domain.  The question for Dundas is whether they can work with the railroad on 118th street, if they can keep access open to the stretch.  The railroad doesn’t have specific times set yet but McCarthy says the plans are far enough along that the project could start this year or next.  While there are some wetlands to deal with, McCarthy said the Rail Roads have “immense” power.  Surveyors have already been on the scene and talked with local landowners.  McCarthy’s interview is online at kymnradio.net.

Only 2 items but big topics on tonight’s Northfield Council Work Session

A review of the Save the Depot project and the Skateboard Park are the 2 discussion items at tonight’s Northfield City Council work session.  The Skateboard Park has been a subject with several incarnations of Councils and the Skateboard Coalition for a dozen years.  Deciding on location and price tag have been the most contentious issues.  It appears that council has made a final decision on the LOCATION but the price tag has escalated considerably over the years.  The site Old Memorial Park, the price $192,000.  The Council agreed to a total of $60,000.  The Coalition has a total of $70,500 in cash, grants and pledges.  That leaves a deficit of $61,500.  City Staff is recommending Council approve the extra dollars from the City.  The meeting begins at 7 and will be streamed live on the City’s website.  Mayor Graham will be in studio tomorrow morning at 7:20.  Kari Nelson with the Skateboard Coalition will be in studio Thursday morning.
