Body cams not new to Northfield Officers
Body cams aren’t new to the Northfield Police Department. Chief Monte Nelson says they’ve been testing various cameras for years. He figured about 5 versions so far. The problem is they are prone to breaking as is anything officers wear on their clothing. Nelson says there’s good reason to use them. For example about 2 months after they started testing them, a suspect at a domestic assault took on 4 officers. They were able to video from 2 angles. However, they can be expensive, the bodycams can cost up to a $1,000 a piece. Currently the department is testing 2 better versions but their priority is squad cams as those all need to be upgraded. Another piece to the puzzle is the amount of server space the recordings take up. Nelson says you can eat up multiple terabytes of information. While there are several considerations, Nelson does say that he would welcome bodycams.
