Once again a legacy park grant is available to Northfield and once again a decision must be made quickly – by September 26th. The idea is to purchase more land for the Cannon River regional park. Mayor pro tem Zweifel said council all agreed that the land was strategic but the work load may be too much for city staff particularly Public Works who is understaffed. Taking on putting together a grant may be more than they can handle. She asked that staff make the decision as to whether they want that extra work load. Council talked about having the item on this week’s agenda but it doesn’t appear to be listed.
The Tavern celebrates 30 years of “great food… at a fair price”
This month marks the 30-year anniversary of the Tavern of Northfield. The downtown
restaurant is best known for its “from-scratch” kitchen and the warm, charming, historic feel. Co-Owner Chuck Pryor said “It’s like coming home around the kitchen table,” He says when they opened the doors [back in 1984] there were three important goals: great food, served in a relaxed atmosphere, at a fair price. The Tavern continues this legacy today with its true scratch kitchen, fresh baked breads and desserts, homemade soups and sauces, and a dedication to the quality of its food and service,”. Starting out on a shoestring budget and 5 owners, Pryor said it took 5 years before they saw a paycheck and the ownership whittled down to 2. He co-owns the Tavern with Chris Basina, who also serves as the head chef at the Tavern as well as at the Ole Store Restaurant., Pryor also owns the Ole Store and The Grand Event Center. Vice President of Operations Deanna Cross has been with the Tavern and Ole Store collectively for 20 years now. She manages both restaurants and speaks highly of the Tavern team’s camaraderie. Tonight they will celebrate with a special event “Share Our Strength’s Dine Out for No Kid Hungry”. The Tavern will feature 3 local teen musicians in addition to donating 10 percent of their sales from 11 this morning to midnight. The teens will play from 6 to 9 tonight in the Tavern Lounge.
Library open house tonight
The Library will be holding an open house tonight. Councilor Zweifel encourages citizens to take a look at the concept design, talk with the architects and make a donation. She says they don’t have enough money to cover all the ideas they have and are holding a fundraiser. “So if you like what you see, let the Library Board know with a donation”. The open house is from 7 to 8:30. You’ll have a chance to meet the architects and see their concept.
