Pawn Shop ordinance gets a nod from Nfld council
When talk began of a pawn shop possibly coming to Northfield City Council approved a 6 month moratorium on pawn shops and precious metal dealers last May. With no ordinance, they wanted time to create one. City attorney Chris Hood has spent months going over ordinances in other cities and the Automated Property System or APS which law enforcement use to find stolen items. The primary impetus is to prevent crime through licensure, reporting and record keeping. The document is extensive with many exceptions including those who might sell a piece of jewelry in a garage sale. Jenkins Jewelers would be affected by the ordinance. Police Chief Monte Nelson spoke with owner Craig Jenkins who said the ordinance would have a negative impact on his business and he likely wouldn’t get on the APS system. Jenkins has seen a downturn in buying and selling gold. Nelson said Craig Jenkins has been very helpful to local law enforcement and has protocols already in place. The Council voted to approve the 1st reading. The next step is to create licensing fees and hold a 2nd reading.

The festivities wrapped up yesterday at 6pm and immediately groups came in to start taking the beer tent down and cleanup began. We’ll have more from Police Chief Monte Nelson and how the celebration went from his perspective at 5p.
