Starting today you’ll see a flurry of activity as Northfield prepares for the Defeat of Jesse James Day celebration. The Joseph Lee Heywood awards banquet is tomorrow evening. Bob Will is this year’s recipient. General Chair Hayes Scriven talked about the number of volunteers and non-profit organizations that work so hard to make DJJD such a great celebration. He says there’s a core group of about 70 who chair various events including most of Northfield’s non-profits. Sertoma, Rotary, Lions, Cannon River Watershed Partnership and Dance Academy to mention a few. There are between 300 and 500 volunteers! Scriven said outside of honoring the acts of the townspeople in 1876 raising money for these groups is also a part of their mission.
Council holds closed session on litigation
The Northfield City Council meets tonight in a closed session starting at 6 o’clock to discuss the lawsuit brought by former interim police Chief Chuck Walerius against the City. League of Minnesota Cities attorney Jana Sullivan is representing the City. Walerius claims age discrimination among other allegations.
Council will set City’s preliminary levy tonight
Council will meet for a regular session at 7. There are several items on the consent agenda including a request by Eco Gardens for 2 -20 min. parking spaces at 6th and Division. They’ll also approve a formal search for a Public Works Director. On the regular agenda is approval of the preliminary budget and levy which could be anywhere from 3.5, 2.8 or 0 percent for the City. (It can be lowered up through December but cannot be raised). Council is being asked to approve a pawnbroker ordinance that would require the use of the Automated Property System, a system that helps locate stolen property. They’ll also be discussion of a possible vagrancy ordinance. The meeting will be streamed live online at kymnradio.net.
Planning Commission to hold public input meeting
The Planning Commission will hold a Public Input Meeting for the C-2 Highway Commercial zoning district at 4:30 on Thursday afternoon at Culvers Restaurant – Meeting Room – A quorum of the Planning Commission will likely be in attendance.
