HRA will start demolition of some of Florella’s dilapidated mobile home units

By October the HRA hopes to start demolition of 5 mobile home units at Florella’s.  The HRA has been working with Florence Stanaitis who manages the park for the Edward Teske Trust, owner of the property to purchase the units.  Community Development Coordinator and HRA staff liason, Michele Merxbauer, says the units are abandoned, dilapidated and uninhabitable.  They are beyond the point of what a rehab dollar could do.  The units cannot be sold without a clear title.   The HRA is required to post a 30 day notice in the local paper in case any heir should step forward to claim the properties.  The notice will appear in the Northfield News.  Community Block Grant dollars from HUD through Dakota County are being used which means that Federal regulations state they must pay fair market value.  Estimates are between $500 and $2,000 per unit.  Merxbauer said they’ll begin demolition 30 days from closing.  Staff will contract out that work.  The units have been attracting animals and squatters.  The HRA has their eye on 6 more units they hope to purchase for demolition.

Finally – the Skateboard Park has a home

The Skateboard Park finally has a definite location.  After finding soil issues at Riverside Park, it was determined that Old Memorial would be the best location.  Soil samples there proved that the best location is near the parking lot by the pool.  Park Board member David Hvistendahl added that it will be at least 200 feet from the nearest resident.  The Skateboard Coalition will now finalize design plans  include all concrete ramps which will greatly reduce the noise level.  The steel ones were loud.  There will also be landscaping including berms that will help buffer the sound.  Completion isn’t expected till next year.   Also added to the Old Memorial pool area is a Concession Stand.  Construction is scheduled to get underway this week.  That means that patrons of the pool will be redirected to the entrance near the pump house.  Due to the late start, the Concession Stand won’t be open for business until next pool season.

The 2nd Zumbathon for the Northfield Youth Sports Collaborative is this Saturday.  Organizer Kathryn Schmidt, a Carleton graduate who has worked with the TORCH program explains how the money raised benefits the NYSC to provide sports opportunities for youth no matter their income.  Zumba instructor Juliana Lima says “everyone’s invited”.  They had the 1st event in May and they hope to increase the dollars raised but also the number of participants, being active is their objective.   Lima says there are a number of different instructors and each one has a different style.   She says you may find the right instructor for you, check their schedule and find what fits yours.  Zumbathon is outside this time at Central Park just a couple of blocks from the Weitz Center. Registration starts at 10:15 and they suggest a $15 donation.  Dancing is from 10:30 to noon.  They’ll have raffle tickets for prizes and childcare will be provided.  For call Kathryn at 952-545-6315
