Executive Director exits NDDC
Ross Currier tendered his resignation as Executive Director of the Northfield Downtown Development Corporation. He’s taken another position as the Community Development Program Officer at the Minnesota Housing Partnership. He was unavailable for a comment. But on the NDDC website he referenced the uncertainty of the organization. When asked about the future of the NDDC, President Jerry Bilek said the Board hasn’t discussed it. In fact, he was unaware of Currier’s new position until Monday. However they are still in talks with the Chamber. He said they have a lot of work to do yet. Bilek said, while he was surprised at the move, he was happy for Currier. He said Currier did a great job and will be an asset to his next company. There’s no membership within the NDDC, rather business owners are invited to be a part and can choose to make a monetary contribution. The Board met with their founding fathers on Monday who stressed the mission which, very basically, means to keep the downtown viable in the face of increased competition from fringe development and other economic forces. The NDDC was formed in 1999. Asking Bilek how the downtown area would get the amount of attention the group wants within the broader mission of the Chamber, he said “it’s like an umbrella with 3 branches”. The NDDC, the CVB and the Chamber. He said each would have it’s own mission within that. Bilek did not respond to the question about the recent complaint against the Chamber on the wrongful termination allegation from former Executive Director Mary Schmelzer and the firing of her successor Brent Burns.
Northfield Hospital on Orange Alert after vehicle rollover
A single vehicle rollover near Dennison Wednesday afternoon had Northfield Hospital on Orange alert for nearly 3 hours. Goodhue County deputies were called to report of a rollover at 350th street and 10th avenue in Warsaw Township just after 1pm. Goodhue County Spokeswoman Chris Weiss said the driver of an extended van transporting Hmong workers took the corner on the gravel road too fast and rolled. Sixteen victims were treated at Northfield Hospital Emergency Department. Nine were transferred, seven to Hennepin County Medical Center and two to Regions Hospital. One was admitted to Northfield Hospital.
The Hunt is on… on Monday
The 2014 DJJD Horseshoe Hunt is on! starting Monday. Cluemaster Tim Freeland says get your button registered! The prize for finding the horseshoe is $900 if your button is registered but just $150 if not. You can register online at djjd.org. [that link will take you directly to the registration]. There are certain rules pertaining to WHERE the horseshoe can be hidden. A clarification this year is that it will never be placed on Northfield school grounds. It must be City-owned land. The horseshoe will not be buried. You won’t need a shovel or a ladder. If you destroy any property while hunting for horseshoe, you will be disqualified. Freeland says they want kids involved and want to make it safe. Don’t go on private property, that’s trespassing. Here’s your first unofficial clue. It will relate to Northfield history but outside of the James-Younger gang. Which really leaves it pretty wide open! The clues start Monday, they’ll be read each morning on KYMN and posted on our website kymnradio.net.
