Seriously injured motorcyclists identified, Caring Bridge site has been established for Northfielder
A Northfield woman and a Dundas man seriously injured Sunday evening in a motorcycle accident have been identified as 44 year old Donald Haagenson of Dundas and his passenger 37 year old Audrey Stanton of Northfield. The State Patrol reports they were riding his 2002 Harley Davidson northbound on I-35 near the Cannon River when Haagenson lost control and struck the bridge rail, the guardrail and then rolled into the ditch. Faribault Fire, North Memorial Ambulance and helicopter assisted on scene. The Rice County Sheriff’s department assisted with traffic control. Rochester State Patrol continues to investigate the accident. Stanton is a 2012 Partner family with Rice County Habitat for Humanity. They sent out a press release asking for prayers. Her brother has set up a Caring Bridge site for her. We’ll have a link from our website kymnradio.net. An update says that she is under close observation in ICU at North Memorial Hospital.
Sheriff Troy Dunn talks motorcycle safety
Motorcycle accidents and deaths have increased significantly this year. Rice County Sheriff Troy Dunn says that one of the recent accidents (Hwy 19 at Flying J) the motorcyclist did nothing wrong. The semi didn’t see him and drove right into him. Although rider safety training is not required, Dunn is an advocate for safety training. He says you can go to your local dealership or check out the State Patrol website for classes near you. (personal note: I took the advanced training course at Dakota County Technical College. It is well worth it.) Dunn says pretend that you’re invisible, don’t take for granted that a motorist sees you. Another key thing Dunn says for motorcyclists is dehydration. Dunn talked with doctors who said you must stay hydrated. The sun and wind easily dehydrate you which can make you sleepy. Distraction and inattention are also things for motorcyclists to think about. Dunn adds that just because the speed limit says 70mph on the freeway, doesn’t mean you have to drive that fast if you’re uncomfortable. He says get in the right lane and drive at a speed you’re comfortable with. Dunn also stressed the need for motorists to look twice, awareness by all those out on our roads is key.
Local Nursing homes will see 5% increase starting September 1st
Several laws from the 2013 legislative session take effect this month. Senator Kevin Dahle is a strong advocate for increasing pay for nursing home workers. The 5% increase in funding isn’t specifically earmarked for wages but Dahle says he’s been speaking with Kyle Nordine of the NRC and Pat Vincent of Three Links who told him that wages need to be brought up to retain good employees. How they calculate how much each facility receives is complicated. It’s a formula based on the number of beds and the number and types of services provided. Dahle said this is just a start. The nursing homes will see the increase starting September 1st.
