A fatal motorcycle accident on Hwy 19

A fatal accident was reported at about 10:15 this morning on Hwy 19 near the Flying J truck stop.  Northfield police sent a vehicle, fire and rescue were called and then cancelled.  Interim Police Chief Chuck Walerius said a motorcycle and semi collided.  The Rice County Sheriff’s department is currently investigating the accident and will release more details as they become available.

HPC aims for education

The Northfield City Council met for a work session last night.  The Heritage Preservation Commission shared their goals for updating their bylaws and work plan into 2014.  An important item for the HPC is educating the public and business owners of historic buildings and how to preserve them.  They will also be exploring grant and other funding opportunities for preservation, studies and surveys.

More questions than answers for Fire Service Study group/Task Force

There are more questions than answers for the Fire Service Task Force.  During their meeting with the City Council it was what to do with the current safety center that clearly became an issue.  Council and task force member Rhonda Pownell said the task force voted to get estimates on reuse of the current safety center.  Mayor Graham said there’s already been a study and that citizens are getting tired of the Council spending money on consultants for things they’ve already done.  City Administrator Madigan was quick to point out that in 2011 a citizen task force, that included Betsey Buckheit and Kris Vohs, hired DLR group to conduct an in depth study of the reuse of the current facility.  He added that those are credible people and it’s not fair to discredit the report because Jerry doesn’t like it.  Madigan was speaking of Jerry Anderson, rural fire administrator and current taskforce member.   The meeting was disrupted by technical difficulties but most of it is archived online at kymnradio.net.

Dundas looks to Northfield for Fire Protection

The Dundas City Council also discussed Fire Service.  City Administrator John McCarthy said they’re working with the city of Northfield to contract for fire service.  Currently Dundas contracts with Rural Fire.  That began before Dundas had a full water system.  Now that they are more urbanized, McCarthy says it makes sense to contract with Northfield.  He added that they don’t know how the Fire Service District will be taken.   That’s why Dundas wants to make sure that they are covered by entering into a long-term contract with the City of Northfield.  He says there’s no need to reinvent the wheel.  McCarthy says the League of Minnesota Cities, the Association of Minnesota Townships and other groups have contract models to choose from.

Crazy Daze and Maggie Lee’s cat collection

It’s Crazy Daze in Northfield tomorrow.  Executive Director of the Chamber of Commerce, Mary Schmelzer says that in addition to the great sales, it’s a chance to meet your neighbors.  Streets will close and the bargains will begin at 7am.  Also it will be cat mania.  Maggie Lee donated her entire collection of cat figurines, too numerous to get an accurate count but somewhere in the thousands, to the Northfield Historical Society and  Prairies Edge Humane Society.  Sandy Vesledahl tries to explain the collection “it’s everything you can possibly think of with a cat theme”.There’s even musical cats and a lot more.  The 2 organizations will split money from the sale of Maggie’s cat collection.
