More boomers dying in mc crashes… education and/or helmuts?
The front page of the Star Tribune today says motorcycle deaths are up and baby boomers are most often the victims. The Faribault Daily reports a 54 year old Owatonna woman was killed yesterday afternoon when the motorcycle on which she was as a passenger flipped in a one-vehicle crash in Rice County. According to the State Patrol, Susan L. Daniels was killed on Highway 21 and Bagley Road near the Faribault airport just after 2pm yesterday. 54 year old Donald W. Severson, also of Owatonna, was the driver. He sustained serious injuries and was taken to North Memorial in Robbinsdale. State Patrol says the motorcycle, a 2008 Yamaha MC, was traveling west on Highway 21 when Severson lost control, went onto the shoulder and flipped the cycle. Both Daniels and Severson were ejected. Neither was wearing a helmet and no alcohol was detected. According to today’s article in the Strib, nearly half the accidents this year, 32 of which have been fatalities, were caused by a motorcyclist losing it on a curve. Despite a record number of registered riders, sign-ups for safety courses have fallen to the point where several training programs have been dropped. Instructors believe classes make a huge difference while the Insurance Institute says there’s no proof of that. Instead, they advocate mandatory helmut laws. Two-thirds of this year’s Minnesota motorcyclist fatalities were not wearing helmuts.
Mayor gets his Zumba on!
The Mayor was looking good on Saturday in a zumba class at the Northfield Senior Center! The Northfield News reported that Mayor Graham made a special appearance at the ”Zumba, Drugs & Food Reality Show Challenge’ on Saturday. Dundas K-Mart pharmacist Larry O’Connor organized and took part in a Zumba dance class and a cooking competition. Juliana Lima led the dance class, then took on “Larry the Pharmacist” in the cooking contest that was well attended by members of the Senior Center. Those who took part in the the Zumba class were given a Kmart gift card, while some of those in attendance at the cooking competition — with the focus on healthy eating — were rewarded with prizes. O’Connor has organized future events that will shed more light on healthy eating and diabetes.
Mow your lawn says the City
The City has been receiving a lot of complaints about lawn maintenance. They recently hired a part time temporary employee, Jay Hanel, to assist in communicating with residents their responsibility for property maintenance. The City’s Jim Kessler says, hopefully the education path will minimize the enforcement path. Last week staff hired a local lawn maintenance firm to mow about 25 lots.
