Warrant arrest nets guns and a growing operation
In the wee hours of Wednesday morning, an alert Rice County Deputy Malecha spotted 35 year old Steven Daniel Borgstahl standing outside his home on Roberds Lake blvd in Faribault. There was an arrest warrant for Borgstahl in Hennepin County. Upon arrest, Malecha escorted Borgstahl inside to get his phone. In plain view were several marijuana plants, drug paraphernalia and a rifle lying on a bed. He also saw more pot plants and firearms inside a closet. Malecha then called Agent Smith of the Cannon River Drug and Violent Offender Task Force. Unaware of Borgstahl’s operation, the task force was able to secure a search warrant within 3 hours. Rice County Sheriff Troy Dunn said the judge signed the search warrant at about 5am. He applauded his patrol officer and the task force for working quickly. The search revealed loaded weapons, various ammunition including hollow points scattered throughout the home, 24 pot plants, drug paraphernalia to ingest methamphetamine along with equipment for drug sales. Dunn says it alarms him that this guy had a loaded weapon laying on his bed. He must’ve been afraid of something. “Drugs and guns are never a good thing”. That was all accessible to his 15 year old son. The Drug task force also found indoor growing equipment and a stolen skid loader on the property valued at $14,000. A notation in Borgstahl’s criminal history said that he’s not allowed to have guns. Added to his already long history will be 6 more charges, 4 of which are felonies. The most serious involves the weapons which carries a maximum 15 year sentence. He’s currently in the Rice County jail.
Riverview Drive reclamation takes a step forward
The Northfield City Council quickly approved the Riverview Drive street reclamation project. Public Works Assistant director, Brian Erickson included proposed sidewalks and stormwater improvements. One stretch of Riverview Lane will be paved with concrete. Cemstone requested it and will pay the difference between asphalt and concrete. In terms of total cost, “it’s about $350,000 including resurfacing, sidewalks and stormwater”. Monies would come from a combination of Minnesota State Aid, special assessments and a small portion from the City. This authorizes staff to go out for bids which will come back to council at their July 8th meeting. The entire meeting is archived online at kymnradio.net.
