news radioNorthfield man wanted in Florida

A Northfield man arrested Saturday is a fugitive from justice.  28 year old Ismael Rodriguez, also known as Ismael Juan Mateo, was arrested by Northfield police for misdemeanor domestic assault and disorderly conduct.  It was discovered that he is wanted by authorities in Florida where he was convicted of felony drug possession.  He was sentenced to 18 months probation, wherein he was not allowed to leave the state.  A warrant for his arrest was issued in 2007.  He is in the Rice County jail awaiting extradition.

Clay Target League gets School Board’s okay

The Northfield School Board met last night.  On the agenda was creating a varsity sport for trap shooting.  The room was filled with about 75 supporters including most of the Clay Target League.  Superintendent Chris Richardson said that it was a good example of courteous public discourse with some opposed to   just the thought of the school district involved with anything to do with guns.  On the flipside there was a lot of support for the co-ed sport that is very inclusive.  Richardson says the kids said it’s the only sport that they’re interested in and they enjoy the teamwork.  The board voted 5 to 2 to include the Clay Target League as a varsity sport. Those kids will now have an opportunity to letter.  Anne Maple and Kari Nelson voted no as they were philosophically opposed to it.  Each member had a chance to express their views in the public forum.  Richardson was pleased with the respect showed by all parties to the process.  Richardson pointed out that none of the equipment will be on school grounds as all practices and competitions will be off site.  The team had been under the umbrella of the Community Services program up till this point.

Book Raid raises over $51,000

The 53rd annual Great Northfield Hospital Auxiliary Book Raid was a success once again.  First time co-chair, Kathy Tezla said they raised 51,290.79.  Tezla just retired and was happy to be a part of giving back to the community.  She praised the volunteers for their hard work.  It takes about 2 weeks to get all set up for those 4 ½ days.  All the proceeds will go to the Cancer Infusion and Breast Care center.  Speaking of which, the Center is inviting women to combine an important Spring Screening with their seasonal Spring Cleaning.  Those who schedule mammograms the week of May 19 will receive a complimentary Gerbera daisy. For an appointment, call 507-646-1143.

Should the Council absorb the EDA?

The Northfield City Council meets for a work session tonight at 7:15pm.  They will be taking a tour of the Wastewater Facility beforehand.  Part of the agenda includes discussion over whether the Council should take over the duties of the EDA.  The meeting will be streamed live online at kymnradio.net.
