Save the Depot receives $10,000 matching grant
The Transit Hub and the Depot are two different things. The Hub is a City project while the Depot is a grassroots project by a group called Save the Depot! Save the Depot’s Alice Thomas explained the purchase contract for the land known as the Q-Block yesterday morning on KYMN. In the agreement they recognize that the land could be used for both. Eventually, they hope, the land will be divided between the Depot and the Transit Hub. For a look at the artist’s rendering of the 1917 design of the Depot go to northfielddepot.org. The Save the Depot group has been working to raise the funds to move the building and renovate it. Pat Allen says now’s a good time to donate with the $10,000 match. It’s actually 2 separate $5,000 donors. You can double your money by donating now. In order to buy the land on the Q-Block from the City for a dollar, there is a deadline of July 2015 for the Save the Depot group to raise the necessary $293,000. (the deadline had been this summer). Right now they have $123,000. For all the details on their plans, fundraisers and how to donate go to northfielddepot.org.
Medical marijuana cautiously supported by our Senators
A Medical Marijuana bill will move to a conference committee after sailing through the Senate 48 to 18. District 58 Senator Dave Thompson has been a supporter with stipulations that safeguards be in place on the production and distribution of marijuana. In other words, no growing in your basement. He says this bill has met the criteria. With a different version in the House, the conference committee is expected to negotiate a compromise. District 20 Senator Kevin Dahle agreed that the bill is narrowly tailored. He also said that the bill is veto-proof. It is not fully supported by law enforcement although there are some warming to the idea. The Governor has stated that he would not sign without the endorsement of law enforcement but polls are saying the public wants to see a bill pass.
WES nearly didn’t make it out of committee
The Women’s Economic Security Act nearly didn’t make it out of conference committee. District 20 Senator Kevin Dahle said on a 34 to 33 vote, it did NOT get sent back to committee. Dahle says it’s really model legislation having to do with equal pay, caregiving and nuances of current law that need to be updated.
