news radioSchool Board ponders Clay target league at NHS

The Northfield School Board heard a recommendation to implement a clay target league at the High School level.  Community  services has run a program similar to this.  The activities are held at the shooting range in Morristown.  Superintendent Chris Richardson says the Activities Advisory Committee looked over the program carefully, determining that there is ongoing interest.  The team is looking for the same consideration as any other team, including the bowling league which is also an off site sport.  Richardson says, there are some in the community that feel that the notion of guns and school is  “philosophically problematic”.  He says the Board wanted to share this with the public before voting on it.  There are 200 schools out of the 334 school districts that currently have clay target leagues.  He says it’s “the fastest growing high school sport”.  Richardson says a varsity level sport is the opportunity for a student to get a letter.  He says, most kids want that.  The activities fee would cover kids who go to tournaments and the cost of the letter.  He agrees this one has more emotion tied to it.  The practices and competitions will be on Sunday afternoons.  Under no circumstances will guns or ammo be brought onto the school grounds in connection with the Clay Target League.  The students will also provide their own transportation just as the bowling team does.  This will come back to the Board in 2 weeks.

Local farmer to testify before Congress

This winter was brutal in several ways including the propane shortage and purported price gouging.  Senator Al Franken conducted a roundtable discussion earlier this year in Nerstrand.  Tomorrow there will be a hearing in Washington.  Local turkey farmer, John Zimmerman, will testify before Congress.  Franken says there were several factors that created the crisis, the late/wet harvest, the unusually cold winter, a pipeline disruption and the export of more propane than normal.  He added that the cost went from just under $2 a gallon to, in some parts of Minnesota, $6 a gallon.  Franken says that just can’t happen again.  Zimmerman will testify in front of Congress on the economic impact.  Franken says “Zimmerman’s a good guy and I’m glad my colleagues will have a chance to hear him…”

Nfld Historical Society gallery damaged

The Northfield Historical Society suffered water damage due to a busted pipe.   Late Friday night, Executive Director Hayes Scriven, received a call from a tenant saying there was water spraying out from a wall.  Shortly after, the alarm company called to say the smoke detector was malfunctioning in the exhibit gallery.  Curator Cathy Osterman and her husband shut off the water and cleaned up the mess in the gallery and the archive room.  The water had reached the basement.  Scriven says, luckily only some boxes were wet and only one item was damaged.  The situation was stable but then the fire alarm went off again early Saturday morning.  The water had cause the security system to malfunction.  And the water had started to drip again.  A plumber was called in and necessary repairs were made.  Damage was sustained in the gallery so it will remain closed until those repairs are completed.  The store did reopen yesterday and Scriven says they will still be able to tell the bank raid story in the rotating exhibit gallery.  They won’t be charging admission for the tour until the gallery is repaired.

Prayer breakfast scheduled tomorrow

National day of Prayer is tomorrow and you’re invited to breakfast at St. John’s from 6:30 to 8:30.  A program will begin at 7.  It will be a little different this year.  Brett Reese explains that there will be prayer but also 3 keynote messages will be delivered by Morey Vagness, Larry Christenson and Fred Herzog.  Tickets are $10 and available all over town.
