Inmate death ruled suicide
The Hennepin County medical examiner confirmed that the death of an inmate at the Rice County jail was suicide. 27 year old Shane Alan Wilson had been in jail since April for the attempted murder of his fiance. On June 10th, Rice County deputies and emergency personnel responded to a medical at the jail. Rice County Sheriff Troy Dunn says CPR was given immediately but Wilson was pronounced dead at HCMC on June 13th from brain damage due to absence of oxygen. The Faribault Daily News reports that Wilson had been checked on every 30 minutes. He was accused of stabbing his girlfriend over 30 times. She drove with her 2 children to the Faribault police station where officers found her unconscious and bleeding profusely. Wilson was charged with 3 felonies including attempted first degree murder. Rice County Attorney Paul Beaumaster dismissed the charges this week.
Theis jumps another hurdle
A hurdle that hung up 2 of the CUP’s for Motokazieland has been jumped. On Monday night the Wells Township Board of Supervisors chose to vacate 160th st. west to Lee Theis. That means the piece of gravel roadway 3/10ths of a mile long will become part of his 131 acre motorsports park once he’s closed on the property. There’s still the matter of approval from the Planning Commission who tabled the matter until August 1st due to the uncertainty of who would own that small stretch of gravel road. There are also other conditions. The Faribault Daily reports the county highway department made “suggestions for improvements,” as Theis puts it, to the roadway that could add about $100,000 to the total cost of the Motokazieland project. Rice County Environmental Services has since taken those “suggestions” and has included them in the conditions of Theis’s CUPs. The public will have a chance to chime in on August 1st.
Pets and fireworks don’t mix
As we approach our Nation’s Independence with fireworks and grilling, Prairies Edge Humane Society’s Kathy Jasnoch says to keep pets from grilling materials and never take them to a Fireworks show. She says keep your pets in a safe area away from the explosions and turn on the air conditioner and/or a fan as well as the radio or tv to quiet the outdoor noise. She says the 5th of July is busy at the shelter with all the dogs that got scared and ran away. Interim Police Chief Chuck Walerius adds that some dogs react differently and will “try to eat the fireworks”.
Safety for people too
Walerius also talks about fireworks safety for the rest of us. He says use common sense when lighting your own. don’t let the kids do it. Don’t consume alcohol while playing with fireworks. Another tip is to have a bucket of water or the garden hose on hand just in case something goes wrong. For more information go to the Public Safety page of the City’s website. We’ll have a link from kymnradio.net to that information.
Dan Freeman’s 4th of July Fireworks will be even bigger this year
For a spectacular display, enjoy Northfield’s Fireworks. For years, Dan Freeman single handedly raised money to provide the Fireworks. And, though he passed away weeks ago, the show will go on. Hayes Scriven was part of the group that raised money, in honor of Dan, for this year’s display. He said the Northfield Area Foundation challenged the community to a $5,000 match and the community more than stepped up with nearly $16,000 total. The fireworks will cost $10,000. The gentlemen who does the display said that he’ll “do a heavy 10″, meaning that he’ll pack the fireworks heavier for more display. The fireworks will be shot off at dusk, around 10pm, at the Northfield Middle School soccer fields. You can park at the middle school, Northfield High School or Bridgewater Elementary School. The Northfield Area Foundation’s Dale Ness said their goal is establish an endowment to continue the fireworks into the future.
