Clear your sidewalks or receive notice
After declaring a snow emergency, the City of Northfield has 72 hours to clear City streets curb to curb after the weather system has passed. Residents also have 72 hours to clear your sidewalks. Building official, Jim Kessler reports giving out 50 notices in the last couple of months to people who did not clear their sidewalks. If they have to clear them for you, you’ll be charged. Depending on how long your sidewalk is, it could be upwards of $200. The Northfield police department reported no injury accidents yesterday morning although there were several vehicles that slid into the ditch. We talked with Northfield School Superintendent Chris Richardson who said buses were only about 5 to 10 minutes late and that was more because of traffic jams especially at the Middle School where parents were dropping off students and buses were trying to get out to drop off kids at the Elementary schools. Richardson says he always checks with the bus company. He said none of the drivers reported visibility issues.
Richardson asks for Director of Technology
On another note, Richardson presented a report to the School Board last Monday night for consideration of an additional technology position for the School District. He says he would like to hire someone that would be able to integrate technology and instruction and meet with teachers and students. Richardson said Director of Human Resources and Technology Matt Hillman has been indispensable in the technology arena but he can’t be everywhere. Richardson would like to hire a Director of Technology. He says the money is in the budget. He wanted the Board to consider it and will bring it back at their next meeting February 24th for approval.
Tiger tales again tonight but first Council meets with Legislators
Tonight the Northfield City Council meets at 6 o’clock for a meeting with Legislators, they’ll then hold a regular meeting at 7 o’clock. On the Consent Agenda are changes to the Community Events policy, in particular, in-kind grants. These changes were reviewed by the council last October. On the regular agenda is the Tiger Trail. The last 2 times this came before council, nothing was really accomplished as there is a clear line of division among the ranks. Council is being asked to approve Request for Proposals for the City Attorney positions and their Council Rules of Business. Also on the agenda is a discussion of their work plan priorities. All of these items are carry overs from last week. The meetings will be streamed live online at kymnradio.net.
Northfield can be a Strong Town
Nearly 60 people gathered at the Archer House last night for a Curbside Chat with Chuck Marohn of Strong Towns. (His interview with Jeff Johnson is archived on this website). Strong Towns is a non-profit whose mission is to support a model for growth that allows America’s towns to become financially strong and resilient. Put on by the NDDC, some council members, the mayor and Community Development Director, Chris Heineman were among the attendees. The gist of the meeting was to address a fundamental question of why our towns are insolvent. Marohn’s answers are long term and start at the heart of the downtown area. He says Northfield has a lot of potential, more so than most other cities. Interestingly, the much maligned Land Development Code was also maligned by Marohn. The discussion was videotaped and will be aired on local access.
