Northfield woman sentenced in puppy deaths
In a story that had animal lovers reeling, a Northfield woman has been sentenced for 13 felony counts of animal cruelty. Dakota County Attorney James Backstrom announced late Friday afternoon that 62 year old Dayna Kristine Bell was sentenced by Judge Tim Wermager to 30 days in jail, 45 days of electronic home monitoring and 100 hours of community work service. Bell was convicted by a Dakota County jury in November for causing the deaths of numerous puppies and dogs in her care as the owner/operator of Bell Kennels in Sciota Township. Witnesses reported Bell drowning puppies and other dogs in September of 2011. She also told a witness that she broke the neck of one that bit her. Bell was also ordered to pay a fine of $2,600.00 and to serve probation for four years. As part of this sentence Bell cannot own or work around animals and has forfeited her commercial license. Bell has maintained her innocence and was still operating her kennel until her conviction.

Nfld school district plans to develop 10 year outlook for enrollment and facilities
Taking a look at space for All Day K stimulated conversation for the Northfield School district to look at enrollment into the future. Superintendent Chris Richardson says they need to consider the numbers for the next 10 years and what the facilities look like. The number one thing is to hire a company to do a demographic study of students and an outlook for the next 10 years. They’ll break it down by neighborhood. Richardson says they’re also asking the Board to do a facilities study. Once they have the demographic study, then the question will be the serviceability of the student population. Three companies have provided quotes on what it will cost to have these long term studies done. The school district will be holding it’s 2nd Transformational Technology mid-year feedback session tomorrow night from 7 to 8:30 at the Northfield Middle School Media Center. The session will include a short presentation and time for questions and comments.
