Theis closes the door on Motokazieland

In August it looked like, after years of struggling, Motokazieland would be a reality for Rice County but in a message posted on the website, Motokazieland’s President Lee Theis closed the door.  He said in part, “over the last four years Motokazie has invested thousands of hours and about $500,000 dollars in the development of Motokazieland in Rice County, Minnesota.  The long, expensive and difficult battle with the County administration, the several lawsuits, changing locations and the arduous process took its toll on Motokazie.  Having lived through this I can tell you that it is a disgusting process that grinds away on your emotional and physical health & personality. Motokazie is not comfortable developing on the terms set forth by Rice County, specifically the Developers Agreement and allowable CUP uses.  Obstacles have created a barrier to entry too high for my business to overcome.  Because of these and other considerations we will not be moving forward with the Motokazieland development at this time”.  Rice County Commissioner Galen Malecha was a vocal opponent to the development, citing noise to the neighbors as his main concern.

Tiger will roar again in 2014

It was a busy year for the Northfield City Council.  The most contentious subject being the Tiger Trail.  While the idea of a trail over or under Hwy 3 safely connecting Northfield’s east and west sides was not disputed, nearly everything else about the project was.  From the original grant application to the escalating cost, the trail pitted councilors against each other.  This subject will be back on their plate at their January 7th meeting.  They held a retreat just before breaking for the holidays to discuss personal concerns. Three of those surfaced to the top; gender inequity, being more deliberative and personal conduct in and out of the meetings.   Gender inequity took up 90% of the time.  While the men and women had differing opinions on that subject, Mayor Graham said there’s no doubt that there are 7 people on the council who love what they’re doing and want to make a difference.  He says they’ll do better in 2014.  Three council seats will be up for election in 2014.

They run 24/7 throughout Rice County and neighboring Goodhue, Dakota and Steele Counties too. Call ahead or better yet, buy pre-paid cards for your friends and give the gift of a safe ride home.
