Northfield woman arrested for theft
A Northfield woman is accused of stealing several hundred dollars worth of merchandise. 20 year old Tawnee Jaze Cunningham was arrested Wednesday after Northfield police were notified of a shoplifter at Target. When confronted by police,Cunningham misidentified herself as someone else. Interim Police Chief Chuck Walerius said she gave the name and birthdate of a real person, even looked like her, but they were able to ascertain her real identity as Tawnee Cunningham. On her they found $1200 worth for merchandise, methamphetimine and 4 misdemeanor warrants. Walerius said Target employees were aware of Cunningham and were watching her. They have a sophisticated system to notify each Target wherein, if someone steals an item from a store and then tries to return it at another one, that person is flagged. Northfield police were looking for her anyway as they found some of her personal belongings in the car allegedly stolen by Schuyler Brook, who’s next court appearance is scheduled for January. According to the criminal complaint Cunningham is charged with 2 felonies theft and possession of a controlled substance. she’s also charged with giving a false name. She is currently in the Rice County jail.
Rice County Commissioners deny additional staff requests
This week Rice County Commissioners denied requests for 12 additional staff members from various departments, however they did give Social Services 1 position. The thought being that this position will be able to fulfill many of the requests for other personnel by divvying up the duties and eliminating the $56,000 in overtime they paid out this year and be a wash.
36 narrowed to 3 for Administrator position
(drop after 3p) Rice County is getting closer to selecting an Administrator. They had 36 applicants which they’ve narrowed down to three. They’ll interview them at the first Full Board meeting on January 14th. They hope to have the person selected start in February. Malecha will be named Chairman at that same meeting.
Northfield police say “don’t feed strays”
Northfield police get a large number of calls concerning stray animals, whether they’ve lost one, they’ve spotted one or wondering what happens to them. Interim Police Chief Chuck Walerius says, first, if you lose an animal, Countryside Animal Hospital in Dundas is the animal impound. That should be your first call. If you spot a stray, call the non-emergency number for the Police and the Northfield Community Service officer will respond with gloves, a snare and a cage for transport to Countryside. State law requires they be held for 5 days. Officers also have scanners that can scan for chips in pets. Walerius says they impound 90 to 100 animals a year, which is a lot. However, 99% are adopted. If an animal is euthanized, it’s the decision of the animal hospital but they’re very ill. Walerius says they would prefer residents call police to report stray animals rather than feed them. If you do, you will technically become their owner and be responsible for them. Walerius says they’ve had other calls that included snakes, plucking ducklings out of storm drains and putting baby birds back in nests. If there’s a wild animal call, the police call someone else… unless there’s an immediate threat.
