Northfield man jailed for beating newborn  berg

A Northfield man is accused of beating his child to near death.  26 year old Theodore Cornelius Berg is charged with 1st degree assault and 2nd degree assault to a child under 4.  Northfield police were contacted by a Rice County Social worker when a 4 week old baby was brought in to the Emergency Room December 10th by her parents.  The newborn did not have a heartbeat and could not be resuscitated, she was then flown to Children’s Hospital where they were able to get her breathing again.  Through examination it was determined that the baby had suffered multiple injuries including severe head trauma indicating child abuse.  Berg told police on December 12th that the baby had been fussy and wouldn’t stop crying.  He put her on the kitchen table, hard, 2 or 3 times then walked away.  He came back several minutes later, changed the baby’s diaper and wrapped her, holding her tightly.  She got very quiet and he realized she wasn’t breathing.  He  woke the mother, they then rushed her to the hospital.  Berg told police he may have hit her too hard when burping her.  The child’s mother says she never saw Berg hit the baby only become frustrated.   The baby remains in the ICU in very guarded condition.  An MRI suggests that she will likely be left with permanent impairment.  If convicted of the most serious charge, Berg faces up to 20 years in prison and/or a $30,000 fine.  His initial court appearance is scheduled for December 31st.  He remains in the Rice County jail.

Holland guilty on all counts   av-murder-RogerEarlHolland

An Apple Valley man accused of killing his wife was found guilty early this morning in a Dakota County courtroom.  Dakota County Attorney James Backstrom announced that 37 year old Roger Earl Holland, was found guilty of two counts of First Degree Murder and two counts of Second Degree Murder in connection with the death of his wife, 37 year old Margorie Ann Holland, a Faribault native,  and her unborn child on March 7, 2013. Dakota County prosecutor Phil Prokopowicz said Holland strangled his wife in their townhome after their marriage fell apart and then tried to cover up the crime with a concocted alibi. The trial lasted two weeks and the jury deliberated for approximately 10 hours. Judge Timothy McManus set Holland’s sentencing for this afternoon.  He could face up to life without parole.

Madigan’s memo

In his Administrators memo, Tim Madigan says they hope to have an agreement with Dundas on Fire Services to present to Council in January.  - The work group formed to draft a Joint Powers agreement between Northfield, Dundas and the townships will meet this week to work with City Attorney Chris Hood to draft a JPA.  Madigan says the City Hall reconstruction is nearly complete as there are just a few minor issues left to address.  The Spring Creek Townhome project is complete.   All 28 units are leased and many will be moved in by Christmas.

Sunday hours coming to the Northfield Library

As the City looks for a part time Library assistant, the Northfield Public Library plans on expanding their hours to include Sundays once again starting in January.  Those hours were cut when the State cut back it’s aid about 4 years ago.  In November Council voted unanimously to budget $26,000 for a Library assistant which will cover operating costs for a reference librarian and two circulation staff.  According to an annual library use survey, Sunday hours have consistently been the top request made by library users.  The Library is also being used as a “hotspot” for students with iPads.
