 Peterson White holds seat

Jessica Peterson White handily won the Ward 4 council seat last night.   Between the 2 precincts, Peterson White had 408 votes, Rick Esse came in a distant second with 112 and Scott Oney received 27 votes.  Peterson White, who was appointed in late 2012, will finish out Patrick Ganey’s term which ends at the end of 2014.  Ward 1 councilor Suzie Nakasian and At-large councilor, Rhonda Pownell’s terms also end in 2014.  Esse plans on running again next year.  He told the Northfield News that he’s not sure whether he’ll run for at-large or Ward 4.  Oney isn’t ruling out another run either.  Voter turnout in the special election was low at just about 18% of registered voters.

Inclement weather didn’t hold back crowd for YMCA groundbreaking

(opening with Northfield Youth Choir) …That was the Northfield Youth Choir singing to the large crowd gathered for the YMCA’s groundbreaking ceremony yesterday afternoon.  City leaders, YMCA board members, staff and volunteers, as well as residents didn’t let threatening skies deter them from being a part of the moment.  Mayor Graham addressed the estimated 150 people saying that he grew up at the Y; learning to swim, playing basketball, going to camps and learning Christian values.  As one of 7 children, his parents sent them all to the y where they all felt safe and learned values.  Graham talked with business leaders who are excited about the Y and encouraged by possible economic growth.  Phase I will cost just over $5 million and will include an aquatic center, group fitness studios, a cardio and wellness floor, a supervised children’s center, locker rooms, offices and a community gathering space.  Executive Director, Virginia Kaczmarek said this is Mile 22 of a marathon.  It will take another $3 million to complete Phase 2 which would include a gym and a walking track.   Mayor Graham said “the shining star that is Northfield shines a little brighter today”.  The YMCA Board invites the community to learn more.  You can join them for Breakfast this Friday morning at 7:30 at the National Guard Armory at 519 Division Street.  There will be a short program and a chance to ask questions.  Check out their website at -http://northfieldymca.org/capital-campaign

The Center received five out of a possible five stars for quality of life ratings by residents.
