Rick Esse, Ward 4 candidate talks Tiger, Fire and Economic development

KYMN has been interviewing Ward 4 council candidates this week and we wrap up with Rick Esse.  The Tiger trail is a hot topic.  He says from the beginning he thought it was a convoluted design.  He says we have a safe crossing already at 2nd street.  He said the cost has reached it’s tipping point.  One of his opponents compared the City’s cost of over $700,000 to that of buying a fire truck.  He says they’re 2 different things, one is a recreational trail, the other is an essential service.  Fire Service is another recent topic as a Task Force has just recommended forming a Joint Powers Agreement.  Esse says “it makes a lot of sense”.  He says we can mesh resources.  Esse believes economic development is our number one priority.  (listen to his interview) Esse says he sees a growing dissatisfaction with the current council and their vision for Northfield.  He believes his business experience will serve him well.  He considers himself an independent voice and a creative problem solver.   Esse’s interview is now posted online at kymnradio.net.  Scott Oney and Jessica Peterson White’s interviews are also online.  Election is November 5th.  If you’re not sure what ward you’re in, go to our website, there’s a link posted from Esse’s interview to the Minnesota Secretary of State.

Reconstruction and reclamation projects get the go-ahead from Council

Before street repairs are made, feasibility reports are made.  Council directed City staff to move forward with the report for the 6th street reconstruction Project.  The project is planned to provide a full depth reconstruction on 6th Street from Washington to the dead end at Old Memorial Field, which is 5 blocks.  The cross streets of College , Winona and Nevada are included as part of this project for a total of 10 city blocks at an estimated cost of $2.6 million.   Council also approved reclamation projects for several streets.   You can view a list of them and attached maps and estimated timeline on the City’s website under City Council current agenda.  Council also approved street assessment rates.  Public Works Director, Joe Stapf, suggested to council that rather than spend $18,000-20,000 on a Benefit Appraisal for this coming year, use the 2013 rate for the 2014 projects.  The meeting is now posted in it’s entirety on our website kymnradio.net.

Halloween haunts tonight

Captain Jack Sparrow and his Buccaneers are back.  The 8th annual Buchanan Buccaneer Halloween Pirate Adventure was moved this year to 10524 Kane Trail in Northfield.  It runs from dusk to 10pm and is free, however they will take donations.  Also, check out the Milltown Haunt at 609 Railway street south in Dundas.  The cost is $5 per person or $3 per person with a non-perishable food items for the food shelf.  All proceeds will benefit the local YMCA and the Northfield area food shelf.
