news radioUnder the Dome in Dundas

Under the dome in Dundas.  City Administrator John McCarthy says a private company wants to build a sports dome.  It’s a membrane structure that would be placed on the corner of Hwy 3 and CR 1.  The Planning Commission will be shown preliminary concept plans this week which will include, in part, a tennis court and soccer/lacrosse field as well as concessions and restrooms.  If things go well, McCarthy says it could be up and running soon.  The Dundas Council voted to approve their preliminary tax levy at $713,000 which is 4%.  He says this will affect everyone differently because of the valuation of your property taxes which is set by the County.  Newer residential properties are seeing rising values while commercial properties are seeing falling values.  The preliminary levy can be lowered.

Modern day bank raid or oops?

It looked like a modern day bank raid when a driver accidently hit the gas instead of the brake and droveup onto the sidewalk at the door to the original First National Bank of Northfield.  Just about 9:45 a tipster alerted us to the mishap.  There was no damage to the historic building only a minor wood/paint exchange on the hitching post.  The car may need a couple of new bumpers though.  We have a picture on kymnradio.net.

More students at NHS/Master Facility meeting tonight

The Northfield School Board met last night for the first time in this academic year.  Superintendent Dr. Chris Richardson said they’re starting the year with about 55 students over last year, mainly in the high school level.   Richardson says there’s “a bubble of kids”, about 40 to 50 high school students.  He reminds folks there’s another Master Facilities meeting tonight at 7 o’clock at Greenvale Park elementary media center.  They’re looking to the public for feedback on how far to go with their plans which may include bonding.

Can I see your ID?

The Defeat of Jesse James Days celebration wouldn’t happen without the numerous volunteers and the local non-profits that use the opportunity to raise funds for their organizations.  The DJJD committee hires them to do everything from sell buttons and tokens to pouring beverages at the Entertainment center.  Co-chair Dave Vesledahl noted the amazing speed in which the St. Peters Church group sets up and tears down the tent.  However there was some negative feedback over a new policy to get into the Center which requires an ID for everyone one, each day.  That included committee members and even the Northfield Chief of Police, who was not in uniform.  Vesledahl said “we told the City we would check ID’s and we did”.  He added that he believes it added to a safe and fun celebration with no incidents.  General Chair TJ Heinricy agreed with the new policy and stands behind it.

Nfld Council to decide fate

This was added to council agenda this afternoon:

Add to agenda:

 Proposed Separation Agreement and Release of Claims – (first item on regular

agenda)

 Direction to Mayor and HR Manager on Interim City Administrator candidates

(dependent upon Council action on previous agenda item)

The Northfield Council will meet in regular session.  There will be a public hearing on the Woodley street reconstruction project and they must approve a preliminary levy.  Mayor Graham will be in studio tomorrow morning with a recap.  There’s a new Minute with the Mayor featuring information about Meadows Park and seeking input from the public.  View it on the City’s website at ci.northfield.mn.us.  On tonight’s Beyond the Open Mic, Victor and Don discuss the various crossing proposals for Hwy 3 and what’s up with the City Administrator.  That’s at 6pm.
