Local law enforcement use reality based training
Law enforcement in our area instituted reality based training several years ago. Rice County Sheriff Troy Dunn said when he started his career their training consisted of a billy club and a punching bag and shooting at paper targets. Nowadays they use “simunitions” – something akin to paintball guns that they use with their own firearms. They are suited up and use actors to simulate scenarios such as domestics and burglaries. Dunn said all the police departments in the area (Northfield, Faribault, Morristown and Lonsdale) train together to learn how to work together. They video tape the training and go over it with officers. Dunn and officers from Northfield will be training over the next couple of weeks. We’ll follow the training tomorrow and have more on the impact it makes on the job coming up this week.
Nfld School District works to renew their Authorizer credential
The Northfield School District is being renewed as an Authorizer. We are one of just a few districts in the State that can authorize Charter schools. Superintendent Dr. Chris Richardson said they authorize Arcadia and Prairie Creek in our district. Most other districts have gotten out of doing that and instead use Single Purpose non-profit corporations that focus on authorizing charters. Richardson said the process has been difficult as they’ve had to write narratives for 20 questions and provide 800 pages of documentation and it’s due next week. If it’s approved then they’re good for 5 more years. Richardson said he feels it’s important that the Northfield school district be the authorizers rather than a 3rd party. The Charter schools themselves are reviewed each year by the school district.
